GEORGE TOWN: Obeying the movement control order (MCO) does not mean you stop exercising.
Ex-squash queen Datuk Nicol David shared some tips on how to keep fit at home during the MCO with her fans on her Facebook page.
In the video, the 36-year-old sports legend demonstrates a set of cardio exercises which includes jumping jacks, skipping, lunges, squats and jogging in place.
The workout contains three sets of eight simple exercises with a minute rest in between.
“Life is mostly about how we look at it rather than what we think of it,” she said, and asked Malaysians to keep positive.
Several fitness buffs, including lifestyle coach Chin Jia Jie, 27, also shared their simple workouts online for free.
“I had been uploading free online workout videos for quite some time now. With the MCO, my team and I made plans to move our workout sessions to online platforms.
“We wanted to deliver a positive atmosphere.
“Most people wouldn’t have weight plates, barbells, kettlebells or dumbbells at home. So we show exercise plans that can be done at home using things commonly found at home to add resistance to the workout,” Chin said.
Expert advice: Nicol shared some tips on how to keep fit at home during the MCO with her fans on her Facebook page.
Among the items he recommended using are towels or filling up a backpack to make it heavy.
“We do live workouts and people log in and join us from their homes.
“It is heartwarming to see people bringing their family members on board in our live online workouts,” he said.
Chin advised people to work out consistently.
“It will be good to start with three sessions a week. Eat healthily while we stay home. Get enough sleep,” he said.
Fitness enthusiast Loke Kar Chuon, 23, said people staying home should do more exercises to boost their immune system.
“We have to lead a healthy lifestyle although we are at home. We have to rest well, drink enough water and have adequate exercise.
“I initiated a group chat to share different workouts so that people can join in and try the exercises.
“With the correct exercises, 20 minutes of strength training will burn more fat than jogging for an hour,” he said.
Yoga instructor Suzanne Kow, 31, said the MCO was a good chance to promote online group workouts, which she found to be a great way to destress and keep the immune system in tip-top shape.
“The recent MCO has disrupted the routine for gym-goers. So I make short workout videos and publish them on my Facebook page daily.
“Some of my followers will record videos of them doing the workouts and send them to me,” she said.
The National Sports Institute also uploaded several home workout videos and tips on healthy eating on their Facebook page.
