How to make your New Year’s fitness resolutions outlast January – SFGate

You’ve survived January, and if your New Year’s resolution has, too, you’re beating the pack. According to one study, most New Year’s resolutions die by January 12. Whether you’re going to pilates before work three days a week or training for your first road race, you deserve a gold star for making it this far.

But no matter how steadfast your are, you may still need a boost in mid-winter. Even small tweaks, like a gym bag you won’t be embarrassed to lug to work, or double-duty toiletries for your post-gym shower, can help you get there. And feel free to grab gold-star stickers if that’s what’ll keep you motivated—whatever it takes. Here are a few things to consider on your way to getting in great shape

A gym bag that’s ready to go all day

Sure, you can make do with stuffing work clothes into a freebie tote, but a good gym bag lets you bolt to the gym or workout studio without hesitation. You’ll want something that fits a change of clothes, a water bottle and toiletries that isn’t a bulky pain to carry to the office or out to drinks later. And if you’re going to carry it to happy hour, all the better if it’s not a total eyesore, too.

That sounds like a tall order, but thankfully, big-box stores like Target do a good job of imitating the pared-down, trendy accessories fashion startups produce. A bottom pocket gives you a place to store your shoes, and the top half can hold a change of clothes, a laptop and even a lunch box.

Additionally, if you love skincare and beauty routines, there’s no reason to depart from your normal routine—after all, you’re taking a yoga class, not scaling Everest. Over the past few years, beauty brands have released make-up and skincare designed specifically for the gym, too. Even if all you need is deodorant and body wash, it’s worth having a dedicated gym bag version.

Beauty products that don’t take up a lot of space help, too. For example, a lip and cheek balm that you can apply with your fingers cuts out the need for a brush. And an oil that isn’t too heavy, like Argan oil, works both as a moisturizer and as a hair conditioner.

Audiobooks to keep you entertained

It’s easy to get bored of the same music or to run through your go-to podcasts between workouts and commuting. Consider adding an Audible subscription to your repertoire. For $15 a month, you can download one book a month, plus two Audible originals. While most podcasts last an hour or so, a book usually runs somewhere between 12 to 20 hours, depending on length. In other words, if you run for an hour, three times a week, you’re set for a month and have something else to look forward to. The San Francisco Public Library also lets you check out audiobooks for free as long as you have a library card.

Oh, and speaking of audio, invest in adapters for AirPods if you have them. They come with a resealable bag and are easily stashed in your gym bag.

Basic home gym equipment

If you don’t already have a home gym set up, you need only a good workout mat and gym shoes. Tons of routines online require nothing else. With a few inexpensive additions, however, you can expand your options way further.

Amazon’s basic dumbbell set is inexpensive and stacks nicely. Add a set of resistance bands, which take up even less space, and you’ve got all sorts of weight training and resistance routines. Plus, resistance bands pack up easily well if you travel a lot for work, too.

A foam roller can make a huge difference, too, whether you run, lift weights, or play sports. Before a workout, it helps stretch you out. Afterward, it can help with recovery time and soreness. The experience is somewhere between a stretch and a massage and is oddly satisfying.

App help

People who run love to tell you all you need to workout is a pair of shoes, but no all of us were all born runners. If you need inspiration, Peloton’s app, which costs $13 a month for non-bike owners, is loaded with HIIT, stretch and yoga classes. If you do have a gym membership, or a less fancy home exercise bike, you can even use the app to take Peloton’s coveted spin classes. Aaptiv offers a similar subscription-based, app-based class and iincludes training guides for races as well as group challenges.

A yoga mat that goes anywhere and everywhere

Maduka’s travel yoga mat is great for, well, travel, but also for all those times when you don’t want to lug a full-sized, roll-up mat. While it lacks the padding of a regular mat, it’s grippy and textured, giving you a more controlled workout (Have you noticed those slip-slidey ones are so often the ones yoga studios rent out when you forget yours?). It’s also perfectly adequate for stretching, HIIT, and more at home.

Better planning

Ask any expert how to stick to a routine and they’ll tell you: Plan ahead. ClassPass and class sign-ups at your gym can help hold you accountable just by means of cancellation fees. If those don’t keep you accountable, get a planner and commit to creating a schedule on Sunday night. A lot of 2020 planners are on deep discount, since we’re well into the year. Although Moleskin’s soft cover planners aren’t on sale now, they have a weekly calendar on one page and a lined side for to-do lists and notes on the opposite page. If you don’t need an hourly scheduling option, it saves you a lot of space and makes it easy to get a bird’s eye view of your week.

If you simply wouldn’t pay for 11 months of calendar, dateless planners help you keep and set goals. Many, like the popular Panda Planner, run three months with the aim of helping you set and achieve goals in a fixed period. But if you just want a dateless planner without the pep talk, there are plenty of options for that as well.
