Biomedical scientist Dr Zac Turner says loading up on the mega-healthy foods before a night of boozing can help stave off a dreaded hangover.
Salmon and avocado both contain natural fats that remain in the stomach for longer – meaning they slow down how quickly alcohol is absorbed.
And munching a handful of nuts while drinking also helps as they deliver B vitamins, which get depleted in the body when boozing.
If you wake up feeling slightly delicate still, reach for a cold glass of coconut water for a major potassium boost, the doc told news.com.au.
Superfood Chia seeds will also help expunge the body of toxins stubbornly hanging around in the body from the night before.
And anyone on a night out should always remember to drink plenty of water during the evening and before bed to avoid a hangover.
Tips for avoiding a hangover
- Eat baked salmon, avocado and nuts before and during drinking
- Munch on nuts containing B vitamins
- Drink plenty of water during the night out and before bed
- Eat fruit after you drink
- Try coconut water the next day
- Exfoliate in the shower as soon as you wake up
- Eat beetroot the next day
- Add a pinch of salt to your water
- Or just don’t drink at all
Other experts say eating a balanced meal with lots of protein and fat helps protect your stomach from the damaging side-effects of alcohol.
But try to swerve the kebab after a night out and instead reach for fruits that are high in fructose – such as grapes or apples – that efficiently detoxify the liver of alcohol.
Even a thorough scrub in the shower the next day can help as it gets the circulation flowing – meaning alcohol can be processed faster.
And if you’re still feeling rough, beetroot is proven to help liver function.
