Boris Johnson has confirmed that the fitness industry should be up and running this month, which will be welcome news to the fitness-obsessed, who have had to settle for at-home workouts since March. Speaking on LBC Radio this morning, the Prime Minister said that gyms will be able to open “in a couple of weeks”.

“We are going to reopen gyms as soon as we can do it in a Covid-secure way and I think that the date for reopening gyms at the moment, if we can do it, is in just a couple of weeks’ time.”

The government has been criticised by many in the fitness industry for the decision to open pubs and restaurants this weekend, but leaving gyms forced to stay shut. When answering why this was the case this morning, Johnson said: “People, I think, listening to this debate do know the answer to that, and that is to stop the spread of the disease.”

Exactly what gyms will look like post-lockdown remains to be seen, but many fitness centres across the country have been preparing to open under new guidelines, which will likely see more frequent disinfecting and smaller capacity and class sizes to help maintain social distancing.

In the interview, Johnson also addressed that the government is keen to get the theatre industry open again.

“The best way forward for the country is to get the economy moving again. We want to get every part of our industry, including theatres, that are so vital.”
